Short Description:
The Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus), a migratory bird, is a common visitor to Pakistan during its wintering season. With a distinct long, curved bill, it's often spotted in coastal areas, wetlands, and estuaries along the coastlines of Karachi, the Indus Delta, and Balochistan. During migration, they can also be sighted inland, particularly in open grasslands and agricultural fields. Whimbrels are known for their distinctive "whimbrel" calls, which they use for communication and during flight. They primarily feed on crustaceans, insects, and small invertebrates found in mudflats and shallow waters.

Distribution-wise, they’re widely dispersed along Pakistan’s coastline, with concentrations in key wetland habitats such as the Indus Delta and the Balochistan coast.
Behaviorally, Whimbrels are highly migratory, undertaking long-distance journeys between breeding grounds in the Arctic and wintering areas in Pakistan and other parts of South Asia. They often travel in small flocks and exhibit territorial behavior during the breeding season.
