Short Description:

Coppersmith Barbet (Psilopogon haemacephalus), also known as the "Tak Tak" in Pakistan, is a small, plump bird characterized by its vibrant green plumage, red forehead, and distinctively stout bill. Its name originates from the metallic "tak-tak" sound it produces, resembling the sound of a coppersmith striking metal. This species is commonly found in urban and rural areas across Pakistan, particularly in gardens, orchards, and wooded habitats.

Coppersmith Barbet is widely distributed throughout Pakistan, ranging from the plains to the foothills of the Himalayas and other mountain ranges. It can be spotted in various provinces, including Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan. Its adaptability to urban environments has led to its prevalence in cities and towns across the country.
Coppersmith Barbets are often observed perched on tree branches or utility wires, where they produce their distinctive call, reminiscent of a coppersmith at work. They primarily feed on fruits, berries, and insects, using their stout bills to crush their food. During the breeding season, which typically occurs from March to July, they excavate nest holes in dead or decaying trees, using their bills to create cavities for nesting. These birds are generally solitary or found in pairs, although they may gather in small groups during feeding or roosting. Despite their small size, Coppersmith Barbets play an important ecological role in seed dispersal and insect control within their habitats.
