Short Description:

The Black-bellied or Grey Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) is a migratory bird species that visits Pakistan during the winter months. Distinguished by its striking black belly, grey upperparts, and white underparts, this plover frequents coastal habitats such as estuaries, mudflats, and sandy shores along Pakistan's coastline. Agile and swift in movement, it forages for prey including insects, crustaceans, and mollusks along the shoreline. During breeding season, it migrates to the Arctic tundra. Conservation efforts led by local and international organizations aim to protect its habitats along migration routes and wintering grounds in Pakistan.

The Black-bellied or Grey Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) is distributed along the coastal areas of Pakistan during the winter months. It is commonly found in habitats such as estuaries, mudflats, and sandy shores along the country’s coastline. These plovers utilize these coastal environments for foraging and resting during their winter stay in Pakistan. While their distribution within the country may vary slightly, they are generally observed in suitable coastal habitats along the entire length of Pakistan’s coastline, from the Arabian Sea in the south to the coastal areas bordering the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan.
Primarily feeds on mudflats, but has also been observed feeding like sandpiper picking items from surface of shallow water. Sometimes exposes prey by making a sideways flick combined with a peck. Sometimes feeds at night. Diet mainly insects and their larvae, such as beetles and other invertebrates; occasionally some grass seeds and stems. In winter, takes worms, molluscs and crustaceans.
