Short Description:

Blue-throated Barbet (Psilopogon asiaticus), also known as the "Neel Gulgula" in Pakistan, is a striking bird species characterized by its vibrant plumage and distinct call. Its most notable feature is the blue patch on its throat, contrasting with its green body and red forehead. This medium-sized barbet possesses a stout, compressed bill, which it uses to feed on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates.

Blue-throated Barbet is primarily found in the northern regions, including Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan. It inhabits subtropical and temperate forests, as well as wooded areas with abundant fruit-bearing trees, at elevations ranging from 600 to 2500 meters above sea level.
Blue-throated Barbets are predominantly arboreal, spending much of their time perched on branches within the forest canopy. They are often heard before they are seen, with their distinctive calls echoing through the forest. These birds are known for their territorial behavior, defending their feeding and nesting areas vigorously. During the breeding season, which typically occurs from April to August, Blue-throated Barbets excavate nesting cavities in tree trunks or branches, where they lay eggs and raise their young. They feed primarily on fruits and berries but also consume insects and small reptiles. Despite their bright colors, they can be somewhat inconspicuous among the foliage due to their tendency to remain still when perched. Conservation efforts aimed at preserving their forest habitat are essential for ensuring the continued presence of the Blue-throated Barbet in Pakistan.
