Short Description:

Mainly winter visitor and passage migrant. also resident. Widespread in north. Male has black'anchor' mark on throat and buff gorget. although head patlern is variable and black anchor lackingin some. Some males have rufous face and throat. with or without black anchor (and are thus verysimilar to Japanese Quail). Female has less striking head pattern and lacks black anchor; probablyindistinouishable from female Japanese. Yolco Song is a far-carrying whit whit-tit repeated inquick succession. HH Secretive. If fluShed rises rapidly with whirring wing-beats and brief glideson downturned wings, plunging into cover again. In breeding areas males sing persistently in earlymorning, evening, and sometimes during the day. Crops, paddy stubbles and grassland.
