Short Description:

The Eurasian Woodcock is a medium-sized wading bird with cryptic plumage, characterized by intricate patterns of brown, buff, and black. It has a long, straight bill that it uses to probe the ground for invertebrates, its primary food source. Its large, dark eyes are situated high on its head, aiding in its nocturnal foraging habits. Despite its size, it is well-camouflaged against the forest floor, making it difficult to spot.

In Pakistan, the Eurasian Woodcock is primarily found in the northern regions, including the Himalayan foothills and the Punjab province, during the winter months. It migrates from its breeding grounds in Europe and Asia to escape harsh winter conditions and to exploit the abundant food resources available in Pakistan’s diverse habitats.
The Eurasian Woodcock is a primarily nocturnal bird, spending the daylight hours concealed in dense vegetation or roosting in thickets. At dusk, it becomes active, using its long bill to probe the soil for earthworms, insects, and larvae. It is known for its distinctive display flights during the breeding season, where males spiral upward into the sky, producing a series of whistling and chirping sounds with their wings. In Pakistan, they are often observed in moist woodlands, marshes, and along watercourses where suitable habitat and food sources are available.
