In Pakistan, the Rock Pigeon is a ubiquitous species found throughout the country, from urban areas to rural landscapes. It thrives in a variety of habitats, including cities, towns, agricultural areas, cliffs, and rocky outcrops. Rock Pigeons are highly adaptable and can be found in both urban and rural environments, often nesting on buildings, ledges, and other structures.
Rock Pigeons are highly gregarious birds and are often seen in large flocks, especially in urban areas where food is plentiful. They are primarily seed eaters, feeding on grains, seeds, and scraps of food found in urban environments. They may also consume small insects and invertebrates. Rock Pigeons are known for their homing ability, which has been utilized by humans for centuries in pigeon racing and messaging. During the breeding season, which can occur year-round in Pakistan’s temperate climate, Rock Pigeons form monogamous pairs and build simple nests using twigs, grass, and other materials in sheltered locations such as ledges, eaves, and window sills. The female typically lays two eggs, which are incubated by both parents for about 17–19 days. Both parents also participate in feeding and caring for the chicks until they fledge.
