Short Description:

Scaly-bellied Woodpecker (Picus squamatus), also known as the Scaly-breasted Woodpecker, is a medium-sized woodpecker species found in Pakistan. It is characterized by its distinctive black and white plumage, with a scaly pattern on its underparts. Males typically have a red patch on the nape of their neck, while females lack this feature. Their strong, chisel-like bills are adapted for drumming on trees to excavate insects and create nesting cavities.

Scaly-bellied Woodpecker is distributed across various forested habitats in Pakistan, including the Himalayan foothills, deciduous forests, and wooded areas in the northern regions such as Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. They can also be found in some parts of Balochistan. These woodpeckers prefer mature forests with plenty of dead wood for foraging and nesting.
Scaly-bellied Woodpeckers are primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of insects and their larvae found beneath the bark of trees. They use their strong bills to peck and probe into tree trunks in search of prey. These woodpeckers are also known for their rhythmic drumming, which serves both as a means of communication with other woodpeckers and to establish territory during the breeding season.
