Short Description:

Short-eared Owl is a medium-sized owl with prominent facial disks and short, feathered "ear" tufts (which are not true ears). It has mottled brown plumage with streaks and bars, providing excellent camouflage against its grassland and marshland habitats. Its wingspan typically ranges from 85 to 110 centimeters (33 to 43 inches), and its body length is around 34 to 43 centimeters (13 to 17 inches). Its yellow eyes are large and striking, adapted for low-light hunting.

hort-eared Owls have a widespread distribution across Pakistan, particularly in open grasslands, marshes, and agricultural areas. They are found throughout the country, from lowland regions to high-altitude grasslands and even in some desert habitats. During the winter months, they may also occur in coastal areas.
Short-eared Owls are primarily crepuscular and nocturnal hunters, meaning they are most active during dawn, dusk, and nighttime. However, they can also be seen hunting during daylight hours, especially on overcast days. Their hunting behavior often involves low, quartering flights over open habitats, where they use their acute hearing to locate small mammals such as rodents, voles, and shrews. They will also prey on birds, insects, and occasionally amphibians.
