Short Description:

Speckled Piculet (Picumnus innominatus) is a diminutive woodpecker species found in Pakistan. It is one of the smallest woodpeckers globally, measuring only around 8-9 centimeters in length. Its plumage is predominantly olive-green with fine black and white speckling, providing excellent camouflage in its wooded habitats. The male typically possesses a red crown patch, while the female lacks this feature. This species has a short, sturdy bill adapted for drilling into bark to extract insects, its primary food source.

peckled Piculet is primarily distributed in the northern and northwestern regions of Pakistan, including the forested areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. It prefers dense, humid forests, especially those with ample undergrowth and decaying wood, providing abundant food sources and nesting sites.
Speckled Piculets are generally solitary or found in pairs during the breeding season. They are highly arboreal, spending much of their time foraging for insects on tree trunks and branches. Their drumming sounds are faint and rapid compared to larger woodpecker species. During courtship displays, males may engage in drumming and vocalizations to attract females.
