Short Description:
A rather small diving duck with dark foreparts and back and paler flanks and either a nape-tuft or a peak at hindcrown. Breeding male is glossy black, with prominent crest and white flanks. Eclipse/immature males are duller, with greyish flanks. Female is dusky brown, with paler flanks, usually show tufted nape and squarer head shape.

Feeds mostly by diving; also upends, dips head or picks items from surface or ashore, where feeds on grain. Non-diving birds strain mussels from water flow generated in the bill (suction-feeding). Forages both by day and night. Feeds on seeds and green parts of aquatic plants, molluscs, crustaceans, crayfish and aquatic insects; also potatoes, other species’ faeces, and scraps.
