Short Description:

The White-cheeked Tern is a medium-sized seabird with a striking appearance. It has a black cap extending down to its nape, contrasting with a white forehead and underparts. Its cheeks are white, hence its name, and its wings and back are a pale gray. It possesses a long, slender body, pointed wings, and a deeply forked tail. During the breeding season, adults may exhibit a slight yellowish tinge on their breast feathers.

The White-cheeked Tern is primarily found along the coastal areas of the Arabian Sea, including sandy beaches, rocky shores, and estuaries. They also frequent inland bodies of water such as lakes, reservoirs, and marshes, particularly during migration and wintering periods.

White-cheeked Terns are highly migratory birds, breeding in colonies on islands or coastal sandbanks and migrating southward to warmer regions during the non-breeding season. They are skilled aerial hunters, diving from the air to catch small fish near the water’s surface. They are often observed foraging in flocks, particularly during migration when they may gather in large numbers.
