Short Description:

Yellow-crowned Woodpecker (Dendrocopos mahrattensis) is a medium-sized woodpecker characterized by its striking yellow crown, black and white plumage, and distinctive red nape. In Pakistan, it is commonly referred to as the "Peela Top Ka Toti." This woodpecker has a sturdy bill adapted for drilling into tree bark to extract insects and larvae, its primary food source. It is known for its distinctive drumming, produced by rapid pecking on resonant surfaces, often trees, as a means of communication and territory establishment.

Yellow-crowned Woodpecker is distributed across various forested and wooded habitats throughout Pakistan, including the Himalayan foothills, northern forests, and the Punjab region. It can be found in both coniferous and deciduous forests, as well as wooded areas near water bodies. While it primarily inhabits forests, it can also be seen in orchards, gardens, and parks, especially in areas with suitable trees for foraging and nesting.
Yellow-crowned Woodpeckers are predominantly insectivorous, feeding on beetles, ants, caterpillars, and other insects found beneath the bark of trees. They use their strong bills to excavate cavities in dead or decaying wood for nesting, often reusing old nest sites or creating new ones each breeding season. During courtship displays, males may engage in drumming and vocalizations to attract females and establish territory boundaries. They are generally solitary birds, although they may form loose foraging flocks outside of the breeding season.
