Short Description:

Tiny passerine with relatively long, graduated tail, males startlingly colored. All plumages have white supercilium, rufous crown, greyish upperparts, white outer tail feathers, and bluish flanks and rump. Male has lilac wash to crown, and violet-blue sides to head, throat and breast. Female is pale grey-brown.

Common resident and altitudinal migrant in all the areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, absent in east and west borders. Breeds in montane forest zone to upper limit of juniper at 3900m, scrub and thickets; winters at lower in valley-bottom thickets.

Forages among herbs and shrubs, where very active and agile; sometimes forages on ground, investigating root tangles and lichen-covered rocks. Sometimes catches insects by aerial flycatching. Diet small insects and spiders; also, mainly in autumn and winter, small quantities of seeds and berries. Sometimes also feeds on juniper scales.
