Short Description:
European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster), known for its striking plumage and distinctive aerial acrobatics, is a migratory bird species found in Pakistan. With its vibrant plumage of predominantly chestnut, yellow, and blue-green hues, this bee-eater is easily identifiable. Its long, slender body and curved, pointed bill are adapted for catching and consuming flying insects, particularly bees, wasps, and other flying insects, which form the bulk of its diet.

European Bee-eater is primarily found during its migratory passage, typically between March and October. Its distribution extends across various regions of the country, including Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. During migration, these birds can be spotted in open woodlands, grasslands, agricultural areas, and near water bodies, where they hunt for insects and seek suitable nesting sites.
European Bee-eaters exhibit fascinating social and foraging behaviors. They are often observed in small flocks or pairs, engaging in aerial pursuits as they hunt insects on the wing. Using their sharp vision and agile flight, they catch prey in mid-air, returning to perches to consume their catch. During the breeding season, which occurs in Pakistan’s warmer months, European Bee-eaters excavate nesting burrows in sandy or loamy soil, often in riverbanks or cliffs. Both male and female birds participate in nest building, incubation of eggs, and feeding of young.
