Short Description:

Green-backed Tit (Parus monticolus) is a small passerine bird found in Pakistan. It features distinctive green upperparts, a black bib, and white underparts with yellowish flanks. Its appearance is complemented by a black cap and a prominent white cheek patch. This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with females having duller plumage compared to males. They are agile and acrobatic birds, often seen flitting through the foliage in search of insects and seeds.

Green-backed Tit is predominantly found in the northern regions, including the Himalayan foothills, the Hindu Kush range, and the northern parts of Azad Kashmir. It inhabits a variety of forested habitats, including mixed deciduous forests, coniferous forests, and scrublands. This species is primarily resident, although some individuals may undertake local movements in response to seasonal changes in food availability and breeding.

Green-backed Tits are highly active and social birds, often found in small groups or mixed-species flocks. They have a varied diet consisting of insects, seeds, and fruits. Their foraging behavior involves probing and gleaning insects from leaves and branches, as well as searching for seeds and fruits in the vegetation. During the breeding season, they construct cup-shaped nests in tree hollows or crevices, lining them with soft materials such as moss and feathers. Both parents participate in incubating the eggs and feeding the young. Their melodious calls and lively presence make them a charming addition to the avian fauna of Pakistan’s northern landscapes.
