Short Description:

Eurasian Skylark (Alauda arvensis), commonly found in Pakistan, is a small passerine bird known for its melodious song. It has a streaked brown back, pale underparts with dark streaks, and a small crest on its head. In flight, it displays short, broad wings and a stubby tail. Its distinctive song, often delivered in flight, is a characteristic feature of open landscapes across Pakistan.

Eurasian Skylark is widely distributed across various habitats including agricultural fields, grasslands, and scrublands. It can be found throughout the country, from the lowlands to moderate elevations, although it tends to avoid densely forested areas. During the breeding season, it establishes territories in open fields and meadows, while in winter, it may form large flocks in more open areas.

Eurasian Skylark is known for its distinctive behavior, particularly its aerial displays during courtship and territorial defense. Males ascend high into the sky, singing continuously as they hover or glide, before descending back to the ground. This behavior, often referred to as “sky dancing,” is accompanied by complex song patterns and serves to attract mates and deter rivals. Outside of the breeding season, Eurasian Skylarks forage on the ground, feeding primarily on seeds and insects, using their long claws to probe the soil. They are diurnal birds, most active during the early morning and late afternoon.
