Short Description:

Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) is a common bird species found in Pakistan, easily recognizable by its distinctive long forked tail, blue-black plumage on its upperparts, and a chestnut-colored throat and forehead. These agile flyers are renowned for their graceful aerial acrobatics, often seen darting through the air in pursuit of flying insects. They are migratory birds, arriving in Pakistan during the warmer months to breed before migrating southward to wintering grounds.

Barn Swallows are widely distributed across Pakistan, particularly in rural areas, farmlands, and open habitats where they can find an abundant supply of insects for food. They are commonly spotted throughout the country, from the plains to the foothills of the mountains. During migration, they can be observed in various habitats along their flight path, including coastal regions and urban areas.
Barn Swallows exhibit fascinating behavior, including their remarkable flying skills and social interactions. They are highly social birds, often seen in pairs or small groups during the breeding season. Their nests, constructed from mud pellets, are often found in buildings, under bridges, or on rocky ledges. These birds are diurnal hunters, feeding primarily on flying insects such as flies, mosquitoes, and beetles, which they catch on the wing using their agile flight maneuvers. During migration, they travel in large flocks, following established routes to their wintering grounds in warmer regions.
