Short Description:
The Black-bellied Tern is a medium-sized bird with a distinct appearance. It has a black cap extending down to the nape, contrasting with a white face and underparts. Its wings are gray, and it has a slender body with a deeply forked tail. During breeding season, adults develop a black belly, which gives the bird its name. Juveniles lack the black belly and have a more mottled appearance.

he Black-bellied Tern can be found along the coastal areas of the Arabian Sea, including estuaries, mangroves, and mudflats. They also frequent inland wetlands such as lakes, rivers, and marshes, particularly during the winter months when they migrate from their breeding grounds.
Black-bellied Terns are highly migratory birds, breeding in central Asia and migrating southward to warmer climates during the non-breeding season. They are skilled aerial hunters, feeding primarily on small fish which they catch by diving from the air into the water. During breeding season, they nest in colonies, often on sandbars or islands, where they lay their eggs in shallow scrapes lined with vegetation. They are known for their graceful flight and agile movements over water as they hunt for prey.
