Coal Tit (Periparus ater) is a small passerine bird with distinct black and white plumage and a prominent black cap on its head. Coal Tits have a short, stubby bill, ideal for extracting seeds and insects from crevices.

Coal Tit is primarily found in the northern and northwestern regions of Pakistan, particularly in the foothills of the Himalayas and the adjacent forested areas. It inhabits a variety of forest types, including coniferous and deciduous forests, as well as mixed woodlands. This species is known to occur at higher elevations, ranging from around 1,000 to 3,000 meters above sea level.
Coal Tits are energetic and agile birds, often observed foraging actively in trees and shrubs for insects, seeds, and small fruits. They have a characteristic habit of hopping quickly from branch to branch while searching for food. Coal Tits may also visit bird feeders, especially during the winter months when natural food sources are scarce. During the breeding season, which typically occurs from April to July, they build cup-shaped nests in tree hollows or crevices, lining them with soft materials such as moss, feathers, and fur. Both male and female Coal Tits participate in nest-building and feeding the young. This species is known for its distinctive call, a high-pitched “si-si-si” or “tee-tee-tee,” often heard as they move through the forest canopy. Overall, the Coal Tit is a charming and adaptable bird species in Pakistan, contributing to the biodiversity of its forested habitats.
