Short Description:

The Common Redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) is a small passerine bird characterized by its striking black face mask, orange-red tail, and grey-brown upperparts. Males display brighter plumage compared to females and juveniles.

Common Redstarts are primarily found in mountainous regions, including the northern areas such as Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They inhabit open woodlands, scrublands, and forest edges at higher elevations.

Common Redstarts are migratory birds, arriving in Pakistan during the breeding season, typically from April to September. They are known for their agile and active foraging behavior, often seen catching insects in flight or hopping along the ground. During the breeding season, males establish territories and perform courtship displays to attract females. They build cup-shaped nests in tree hollows or crevices, where females lay eggs and both parents take turns incubating them. After the breeding season, they migrate southwards to wintering grounds in Africa.
