Short Description:

The spectacled finch (Callacanthis burtoni, also known as red-browed finch) is a species of finch in the family Fringillidae. It is found in temperate northern regions of the Indian subcontinent, ranging across Afghanistan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan. Its natural habitat is temperate forests with a lush landscape. lthough this species may have a restricted range, it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km2 combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend appears to be stable, and hence the species does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size has not been quantified, but it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern. In Pakistan, Spectacled Finch is scarce resident in Safed Koh, south west Chitral and across northern Hazara District to the Neelum Valley. Breeds in the upper limit of coniferous forest in the Himalayas (2400-3350 m). Limited altitudinal movement in winters

Spectacled Finches are social birds, often seen in small flocks or pairs. They forage on the ground, feeding mainly on seeds and insects. They are known for their melodious calls, especially during the breeding season. They construct cup-shaped nests in bushes or low trees and lay a clutch of eggs. Despite being relatively common in their range, habitat loss and fragmentation pose threats to their populations.
